Rasheed Shabazz

Rasheed Shabazz is a creative cultural communicator. He seeks to spread information and inspiration aAs a multimedia journalist, historian, and educator. Shabazz is Media, Arts and Culture Director at the RYSE Youth Center in Richmond, California. He is also community engagement manager for the Brotherhood of Elders Network, an intergenerational group of Black men based in Northern California. His work has appeared in The Final Call, San Francisco Bay View, Oakland Post, Oakland Local, and numerous print and online magazines. He previously produced radio news at KALX and hosted his own online radio newsmagazine show, The Black Hour.

After attending College of Alameda and Laney College, Rasheed double majored in African American Studies and Political Science at UC Berkeley. While at Cal, he received an inaugural Google-AP Journalism and Technology Fellowship to launch a news website for a campus-based student magazine. After graduating, Rasheed received a year-long visiting scholar appointment to teach journalism and media literacy with students on University of California campuses.

Shabazz was born in Oakland and raised in West Alameda. He is currently working on a book about the history of African Americans in Alameda.
