Emergence – A special commencement event and reception

Emerging Arts Professionals/SFBA celebrates the culmination of it’s first year Fellowship program with Emergence, a special commencement event and reception highlighting the extraordinary accomplishments of the inaugural class of Fellows. This event will also bring together dynamic innovators Joe Goode, founder and artistic director of the Joe Goode Performance Group and Akaya Windwood, president of Rockwood Leadership Institute for an intimate conversation about the arts, innovation, sustainability and leadership and take a look at how their work has raised the bar for excellence in their fields and the culture sector.

About the Fellowship Program
Emerging Arts Professionals/SFBA is a network focused on empowerment, leadership, and growth of next generation arts and culture workers in the San Francisco Bay Area through knowledge sharing, learning opportunities, and partnerships. By supporting today’s emerging models and mindsets, we hope to generate a path for individuals’ meaningful and sustainable work and to stimulate a vibrant, integrated, and evolving arts and culture sector.

This Fellowship program seeks to answer the question: What’s next? and looks to the future by bringing together insightful and energetic leadership and emerging models in a convergence of participatory practice and action learning. The new frontier of creative leadership requires new competencies, skills and sensitivities that are adaptive, engaging and relevant. This program aims to introduce an alternative model for professional development that balances traditional structure with increased creativity and experimentation.

2010-2011 Graduation speakers

Joe Goode, Artistic Director, Joe Goode Performance Group
Joe Goode is a choreographer, writer, and director widely known as an innovator in the field of dance for his willingness to collide movement with spoken word, song, and visual imagery. He was awarded a John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship in 2007, and the United States Artists Glover Fellowship in 2008. In 2006 Goode directed the opera Transformations for the San Francisco Opera Center. His play Body Familiar, commissioned by the Magic Theatre in 2003, was met with critical acclaim.

The Joe Goode Performance Group, formed in 1986, tours regularly throughout the U.S., and has toured internationally to Canada, Europe, South America, Africa, and the Middle East. Goode is known as a master teacher; his summer workshops in “felt performance” attract participants from around the world, and the company’s teaching residencies on tour are hugely popular. He is a member of the faculty of the University of California, Berkeley in the department of Theater, Dance and Performance Studies.

Joe Goode Performance Group’s innovative form of dance-theater is accessible, personal, and explores unabashed emotional terrain with humor and honesty. Using text, voice, and high velocity movement, JGPG blurs the line between theater and dance to make work that is thoughtful, groundbreaking, and deeply felt. JGPG believes in the power of theater to create a transformational experience. The work touches on social issues—including gender, race and sexuality—with the idea of illuminating and investigating in order to stimulate questions and conversations. And perhaps remind the viewer of his/her own humanity, however flailing or imperfect that might be.

Akaya Windwood, President and CEO, Rockwood Leadership InstitutePrior to becoming president of Rockwood in January 2008, Akaya served as Rockwood’s director of leadership development for three years. An executive leadership coach and organizational consultant, Akaya has more than 30 years of experience working for social justice. She is known nationally for her commitment to social and economic justice, and for building a compelling vision for effectiveness and collaboration in the nonprofit and social benefit sectors. The Rockwood Leadership Institute was founded in 2000 to provide individuals, organizations and networks in the social benefit sector with powerful and effective training in leadership and collaboration.

Each year Rockwood delivers its programs to more than 250 national leaders working in important grassroots and policy reform sectors that help improve the well-being of our communities and world. Rockwood teaches skills and tools that help these leaders overcome organizational challenges; inspire and align individuals and organizations toward producing quality outcomes; develop collaborative skills; decrease “burn-out”; and create organizations that celebrate sustainability and diversity.
